United States, Thailand to Begin Trial of Combination AIDS Vaccine

July 9, 2002

Researchers announced Monday at the 14th International AIDS Conference that the US and Thai governments will soon begin the largest trial yet of an AIDS vaccine, testing a combination of vaccines on more than 16,000 subjects in the general Thai population. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases will fund the $36 million effort. In another development, VaxGen said its AIDS vaccine could be available by 2005 if two major phase III trials entering completion are successful. VaxGen's trials involve 5,400 high-risk volunteers in North America and the Netherlands, and 2,500 intravenous drug users in Thailand.
