Brazil to Give Away 800,000 Condoms

June 11, 2001

Brazil's Health Ministry and a business organization are giving away 800,000 condoms on June 12th for "lover's day," South America's version of Valentine's Day. The focus of the campaign is heterosexuals, who account for 43.5 percent of all new HIV infections in Brazil. Brazil currently distributes about 200 million free condoms a year. This strategy and a policy of distributing free AIDS drug cocktails to HIV-infected Brazilians have helped to cut Brazil's number of AIDS-related deaths in half since 1995, according to the Health Ministry's AIDS/HIV taskforce.
