Rotary Club Targets AIDS in Ethiopia

June 17, 2002

During a recent breakfast meeting at the Columbia Hilton in Washington, Kassahun Ayele, the Ethiopian ambassador to the United States, thanked the Rotary Club of Columbia-Patuxent for securing a $286,768 grant from Rotary International to help fight HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia. Ayele told the club that Ethiopia is doing everything it can to eradicate the disease, but added: "We are very aware that we cannot fight against this serious problem alone." An estimated 3 million people in Ethiopia are infected with HIV/AIDS, and 250,000 of them are children, according to figures provided by the Ethiopian government. It is estimated that one in five Ethiopian children die before age five.
