Pennsylvania: Syphilis Outbreak in Westmoreland County

June 17, 2002

State health officials are blaming drugs and prostitution for an outbreak of syphilis in Westmoreland County, Pa., an area that had not had a case in almost seven years. Since October, 28 cases of syphilis have been reported around New Kensington, which is about 10 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, state health officials said. Officials said each case involved either a prostitute or a drug user. The cases are the first in Westmoreland County since 1995, and officials fear there may be more. Nationwide, the occurrence of syphilis has declined. In 2000, there were 5,979 cases, a 9.6 percent decrease from the year before.
