Uganda Paper Says Africa Needs 3 Billion Condoms Annually
June 18, 2001
The Ugandan newspaper New Vision on Monday quoted Andrew Natsios, administrator of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), as saying that Africa needs 3 billion condoms annually to fight the spread of AIDS. Last year, USAID distributed 300 million condoms on the continent, he said. But Natsios stressed that while USAID will be providing condoms, the essence of its AIDS prevention program is abstinence and faithfulness. He also said that USAID is beginning a new faith- based initiative in Africa and will work with churches and mosques to influence people's behavior.Adapted from:
