Mbeki Dons Sneakers to Trace Steps of Soweto Protesters 25 Years Ago

June 18, 2001

As he joined hundreds of marchers Saturday commemorating the beginning of the Soweto uprising 25 years ago in South Africa, President Thabo Mbeki told the young demonstrators that they face a struggle even tougher than his generation did. "In fact, your task is more difficult than our task. AIDS is finishing our youth. It was easy to defeat apartheid, but our challenge is to defeat HIV and AIDS." June 16 is celebrated as Youth Day throughout the country.
