ACLU Challenges Louisiana Governor's Abstinence Program

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was to argue in federal court this week that the Louisiana Governor's Abstinence Program uses public money to promote religion. According to documents cited in the suit, materials distributed to the students included a "fact sheet" that blamed the spread of sexually transmitted diseases on the removal of prayer from public schools. Filed in May, the ACLU suit is the first court challenge of an abstinence-based sex education program funded by the federal government, said Joe Cook, executive director of the ACLU of Louisiana. Dan Richey, who heads the abstinence program, was expected to be called as a witness Tuesday.
