ACLU Challenges Louisiana Governor's Abstinence Program
June 18, 2002 The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was to argue in
federal court this week that the Louisiana Governor's Abstinence
Program uses public money to promote religion. According to
documents cited in the suit, materials distributed to the
students included a "fact sheet" that blamed the spread of
sexually transmitted diseases on the removal of prayer from
public schools. Filed in May, the ACLU suit is the first court
challenge of an abstinence-based sex education program funded by
the federal government, said Joe Cook, executive director of the
ACLU of Louisiana. Dan Richey, who heads the abstinence program,
was expected to be called as a witness Tuesday.
