Movie Theater Pulls AIDS Prevention Ads After Complaint

June 20, 2001

The owner of 14 movie multiplexes in St. Louis pulled AIDS prevention ads from two theaters after a patron complained. The ads from the St. Louis Metro AIDS Program were on slides projected before movies began and carried the tagline "Use condoms every time." "It's an important message in these times," said Ron Krueger, II, president of Wehrenberg Inc., which owns the cinemas. "But it does not belong in front of a movie like 'Shrek.'" He said the company has not decided whether to run the ads before movies with more restricted ratings.
