Holbrooke Post to Pressure Businesses to Battle AIDS

June 20, 2001

Former US ambassador to the UN Richard Holbrooke has become president and CEO of the Global Business Council on HIV and AIDS. "Businesses have not done a fraction of what they ought to to combat the disease. They have not done 10 percent of what they ought to do," he said. Holbrooke reported that at a recent Paris meeting at least one executive said his firm was hiring two people for every one job in Africa because so many workers are dying. Holbrooke said the council will open a new office in New York and will "greatly expand" the number of companies caring for workers, their families and customers with HIV.
