News Briefs About 250,000 Ethiopian Children Living with HIV/AIDSJune 20, 2002 Nearly 250,000 Ethiopian children are living with HIV/AIDS due to mother-to-child transmission (MTCT), according to Teklu Belay, head of the AIDS and STD team of Ethiopia's Health Ministry. Directives for training health workers to reduce MTCT have been prepared, Belay said Monday. MTCT during pregnancy, delivery and breast-feeding is the second leading cause of HIV transmission in the country. Three million people in Ethiopia live with the disease -- the third-largest HIV/AIDS population in the world. A vast majority are young people and adults in their prime working years.
