Kenya: New Miss Universe Takes HIV Test to Highlight Disease

June 21, 2002

Russian-born Miss Universe Oxana Fedorona, in Kenya for a visit to spotlight the impact of AIDS, took an HIV test Thursday to publicize the importance of testing in fighting the pandemic. Fedorona was tested at a Nairobi home for children living with AIDS. She also met with Women Fighting AIDS in Kenya (WOFAK) and said women in Kenya should spearhead initiatives to educate the public on the dangers of AIDS. Fedorona is scheduled to hold talks on Friday with officials of Kenya's National AIDS Control Council on the role of the government in coordinating efforts to eliminate the disease. The six-day visit is Fedorona's first international charity tour since she was crowned Miss Universe in Puerto Rico last month.
