Russia Set to Join World Anti-AIDS Efforts: MinistryJune 29, 2001 Russia is set to cooperate with the international community in fighting HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases, the Russian Foreign Ministry said today. Gennady Onishchenko, Russia's chief sanitation physician and leader of the nation's delegation to the UN General Assembly special session on AIDS, said that Russia had registered a total of 115,000 HIV-infected people. Although HIV incidence has surged, only 1,000 cases of AIDS have been identified in Russia, Onishchenko said. He added that the major determinant of HIV's spread in Russia was increasing intravenous drug use.
