Between 500 and 700 Mozambicans Contract AIDS Virus Each Day

June 29, 2001

Each day, between 500 and 700 Mozambicans contract HIV, the health ministry said in a report Thursday. About 1.3 million Mozambicans -- or about 7 percent of the population -- are infected with HIV, the report said. "There is the need to break the silence around sexuality, because taboo about this matter may jeopardize the future of the country," the report said. The report called for condoms to be distributed to young people, and it estimated that 1.6 million Mozambicans would die of AIDS during the next 10 years.
