World Bank Approves $155 Million to Fight AIDS in Caribbean

June 29, 2001

The World Bank on Thursday approved a $155 million loan package to help fight the spread of HIV in the Caribbean. The region has one of the world's highest rates of HIV infection: 2 percent of the population. "It is absolutely necessary for the fight against AIDS," said Orsalia Kalantzopoulos, the bank's director for the Caribbean. "I see this as a first program," she said. "There will be a need for more." The bank's board also approved loans to support national prevention and control programs, offering $25 million to the Dominican Republic and $15.5 million to Barbados. Other countries will also be able to apply for loans, said bank spokesperson Joelle Dehasse.
