World Bank Approves $155 Million to Fight AIDS in CaribbeanJune 29, 2001 The World Bank on Thursday approved a $155 million loan package to help fight the spread of HIV in the Caribbean. The region has one of the world's highest rates of HIV infection: 2 percent of the population. "It is absolutely necessary for the fight against AIDS," said Orsalia Kalantzopoulos, the bank's director for the Caribbean. "I see this as a first program," she said. "There will be a need for more." The bank's board also approved loans to support national prevention and control programs, offering $25 million to the Dominican Republic and $15.5 million to Barbados. Other countries will also be able to apply for loans, said bank spokesperson Joelle Dehasse. Associated Press 06.28.01 This article was provided by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
