South Africa: Department Disputes Figure on HIV in Prisons

June 3, 2002

South African prison authorities are disputing recent assertions by an inspecting judge of prisons that about 60 percent of inmates are HIV-positive, calling the figure unrealistic and unreliable. "We reject the statistics on the basis of their unverifiability," the Department of Correctional Services said. The department said there had never been a survey conducted on the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in South African prisons. "Statistics we have are drawn from voluntary testing of offenders who are ill... and therefore have very limited scientific value. Their representivity is highly suspect," the department said.
