News Briefs Major African AIDS Conference OpensJune 3, 2002 A major two-day conference on tackling AIDS in Africa opens today in Cape Town, South Africa. Its aim is to develop a vaccine that specifically targets the strains of the virus found in Africa. The organizers say most research is funded in the West and may not be relevant to the continent that is home to two-thirds of the world's HIV patients. A vaccine for Africa, they believe, would be the best long-term preventive measure against the virus. The decision to set up a research project was made last year at a summit in Nigeria. The conference is seeking pledges of more than $200 million to get the African AIDS project up and running.
