California: Ads Will Back Bill to Ease Restrictions on Needle SalesJune 5, 2002 Activists are launching a TV ad campaign in California this week backing a state Senate-approved bill that would let pharmacies sell hypodermic needles to adults without a doctor's prescription. California is one of six states requiring prescriptions, a policy that proponents of the change say promotes the spread of AIDS, hepatitis and other diseases through shared needles. The ads will run in English and Spanish in areas including Bakersfield, Fresno, Grass Valley, Merced, Redding, Sacramento, and parts of Riverside and Los Angeles counties. The bill would allow pharmacies to sell up to 30 hypodermic needles without a prescription to a person who is over 18.
