Number of Cases Indicates Unsafe Sex on Rise

June 6, 2001

New York state health department officials reported yesterday that there have been nine cases of syphilis so far this year in the lower Hudson Valley counties of Westchester, Dutchess and Ulster. The state said the nine men with the disease had engaged in sex with multiple anonymous men at rest stops, parks and New York City clubs. One of the men also tested positive for HIV. The numbers mirror a rise in New York City, which had 57 syphilis cases in the first three months of this year, compared with 117 cases for all of 2000.
