Chicago Judge Asked to Take Himself Off HIV Case

June 7, 2002

Nikko J. Briteramos of Chicago, who has been accused of intentionally having sex after knowing he had HIV, has asked Circuit Judge Jon Erickson of Huron, S.D., to remove himself from the case. In filing the written request, Briteramos, 18, said he believes he cannot get a fair trial if Erickson presides over it. However, the request states no reason for the assumption. Erickson said Thursday he has refused to disqualify himself from the case, leaving the issue up to Circuit Judge Rodney Steele of Brookings, who is chief judge in the circuit. Briteramos was charged with three felonies and could be put in prison for up to 45 years if found guilty on all counts. His trial is set to begin July 24.
