Obituary: Robert B. Hays

June 8, 2001

Robert B. Hays, 46, a research psychologist at the University of California San Francisco Center for AIDS Prevention Studies, died Saturday of AIDS. A Bay Area native who graduated from Vassar College and earned a doctorate in social psychology at the University of Oregon, Hays was alarmed by the spread of AIDS in the gay community and returned to San Francisco in 1988. With Susan Kegeles, he developed Mpowerment Project, an HIV prevention program that stresses the importance of a community of peers to reinforce safer sexual behavior. The program has been adopted in more than six U.S. cities.
