HIV/AIDS Orphans 78,000 Children in Botswana

March 11, 2002

A human rights report released in Botswana last week said that some of the nation's estimated 78,000 AIDS orphans have resorted to begging and prostitution to survive in urban areas. The report from the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor also cites teenage pregnancy and sexual harassment of students by teachers as a national concern, along with incest and sex between young girls and older men. As part of an awareness campaign, the Botswana-based book distributor Edutech has designed a Web site to provide information on the transmission and prevention of HIV.
