Government: India Has 3.97 Million People Living with HIV

India announced Thursday that it had 3.97 million HIV-positive cases, making it the country with the second highest number of people with the infection in the world. The Indian government's National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) produced the figures after conducting a three-month survey across the country last year. "The estimated number of adults living with HIV in the country for 1998, 1999 and 2000 was 3.5 million, 3.7 million and 3.8 million, respectively," NACO said. "In 2001, the total number of HIV infections was estimated at 3.97 million." Unofficial estimates put the figure at closer to 5 million.Adapted from:
