Docs Tackle TB Outbreak

March 16, 2001

Canadian health officials are reassuring the public that the six cases of tuberculosis (TB) reported recently in Edmonton do not present a risk for the general public. Capital Health's Dr. Gerry Predy noted that the patients have been in isolation at the University Hospital's tuberculosis unit and the estimated 200 people who might be at risk through direct association with the patients have been contacted. Predy said the region usually sees between 30 and 50 active cases of tuberculosis every year, but these six cases are unusual in that they appeared as a cluster.
