Russian Minister: Drug Addiction More Widespread than Previously ThoughtMarch 19, 2002 The number of drug addicts in Russia has increased sevenfold
over the past ten years and now stands at more than 1.5 million,
a top Russian official said today. Deputy Prime Minister
Valentina Matviyenko said that while only 270,000 people are
registered as drug addicts in Russia, the experts she consulted
estimate the number is much higher. Matviyenko said the most
alarming trends are the increasing number of young people taking
drugs and the rapid spread of AIDS, fueled in part by drug
addicts sharing needles.
