Russian Minister: Drug Addiction More Widespread than Previously Thought

The number of drug addicts in Russia has increased sevenfold over the past ten years and now stands at more than 1.5 million, a top Russian official said today. Deputy Prime Minister Valentina Matviyenko said that while only 270,000 people are registered as drug addicts in Russia, the experts she consulted estimate the number is much higher. Matviyenko said the most alarming trends are the increasing number of young people taking drugs and the rapid spread of AIDS, fueled in part by drug addicts sharing needles.
