Court: Teacher Violated "Community Values" Using Sex TermsMay 11, 2001 On Thursday the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court unanimously affirmed the punishment of a teacher who was reprimanded and fined for using sexual imagery that violated "community values" in a lecture to an 11th grade class. Richard Bernstein, who had used the terms "penis" and "clitoris" when explaining the literary technique phallogocentrism, had been fined $3,000 and reprimanded by a hearing officer in 1999.
