Nursery School Children Have TB

May 11, 2001

Three nursery school children in London have contracted TB from their teacher. The children, ages three and four, have been isolated in their homes and are being treated with a six-month course of drugs. Five other children were also given a course of antibiotics after showing signs of TB, said Dr. Yvonne Doyle, director of public health at Merton, Sutton and Wandsworth Health Authority.

It is thought that the teacher contracted TB while abroad. About 100 people are expected to be traced and screened. Four staff members from the nursery have been tested, and the parents and siblings of the infected children will also be screened. The health authority is trying to track 13 other children who attended the school last year. Twenty-four children, ages two to five, attend Wee Ones nursery in Wandsworth. It was closed yesterday.
