Gays Bear Brunt of Syphilis RiseMay 11, 2001 New York City's rise in syphilis infections is occurring chiefly among gay and bisexual men, a city assistant health commissioner said this week. "The 2001 increases are mainly among men who have sex with men, especially those living in the borough of Manhattan," Susan Blank told a health department- sponsored forum at the Gay Men's Health Crisis. The number of cases reported in the first three months of 2001-57-was more than double the 26 cases reported in the last three months of 2000. Of the 117 cases reported last year, 91 percent of patients were male, and 74 percent were gay or bisexual.
