Gonorrhea Cases in Region RiseMay 11, 2001 An outbreak of gonorrhea is affecting teenagers in the Taranaki region of New Zealand. Last year there were 20 reported cases of gonorrhea, but the number leapt to 21 in the first quarter of this year, said community health doctor Pat Boulton. Gonorrhea has become both a national and international concern and was at the top of the agenda at the Australian Sexual Health Conference in Sydney last weekend.
Adapted from:Taranaki "used to have none or one case a year. The message is: gonorrhea is back," said Boulton. "We are seeing cases as young as 13, but they are mostly 16 or 17." The typical young person found to have the STD was a teenager, sexually active and had a recent partner change. Because gonorrhea is often symptom- less, most people had no idea they were infected. Most of those who had gonorrhea also had chlamydia, Boulton said. The New Zealand strain is proving easy to treat with penicillin, but in Europe the disease is difficult to treat because it has become resistant to the drug.
