In One Adult Care Home, a Policy to Promote Rights and Privacy

An excerpt from "Policies and Procedures Concerning Sexual Expression" developed by the Hebrew Home for the Aged, Bronx, NY:

"Residents have the following rights, providing in each instance: (1) they do not involve non-consensual acts; (2) acts involving minors; (3) acts and/or behaviors between persons who are cognitively impaired and/or with impaired judgment, or (4) between persons if there is any possibility of the transmission of an STD (sexually transmitted disease); and (5) that they do not impact negatively on the resident community as a whole through public display."

The rights include: sexual expression "with residents or visitors;" the right to private materials "with sexually explicit content;" "to the extent possible," the right of access to facilities in support of sexual expression; and the "right of access to professional counseling pertaining to sexual expression of self or others."
