India: New Forum to Spread AIDS Awareness

May 1, 2002

Chief Minister S.M. Krishna will launch the Karnataka Legislators Forum on May 3rd to create awareness of HIV/AIDS, a Health and Family Welfare Minister said on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters, A.B. Maalaka Raddy said the forum would be inaugurated in the presence of UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot, who is visiting Karnataka. "Political advocacy is an important element for the HIV/AIDS control programs. We hope the forum will boost the HIV/AIDS programs in the state." Raddy said the latest surveillance report revealed HIV incidence among high-risk groups varied between 11 percent and 15 percent, and between .5 percent and 3.25 percent among low-risk groups. "For every reported case, there will be ten unreported cases. The figures may actually be higher than what has been shown," he explained.
