Tough Law to Curb AIDS

May 22, 2001

Zimbabwe's parliament on Thursday passed a tough sex law in an effort to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS. The Sexual Offences Act provides for stricter prison sentences of up to 20 years for people found guilty of knowingly infecting others with HIV/AIDS. Under the new law, women raped and infected with HIV will also be entitled to state health assistance, as will HIV-positive children born out of such attacks. Under the existing laws, the maximum sentence for rape is only eight years in jail.
