Howard Hughes Institute Offers Support to AIDS Researcher

May 31, 2002

Dr. Robert Siliciano, an AIDS researcher at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, was among 11 scientists named May 27 as Howard Hughes investigators. Siliciano will receive an annual budget of $1 million from the Howard Hughes Institute to continue his research into the disease. The institute -- one of the nation's richest philanthropic organizations -- supports about 320 investigators at medical centers across the country. In 1998, Siliciano discovered that patients who are successfully treated with antiviral drugs continue to harbor HIV in their bodies. He is researching ways to eliminate the virus from the body completely, which would enable patients to stop taking medication.
