News Briefs High Rate of HIV Found Among Pregnant Women in Luanda, Angola: OfficialMay 6, 2002 Some 8.6 percent of pregnant women in Luanda carry HIV, according to a study of 500 women in the Angolan capital, UNAIDS expert Alberto Stella told a medical conference recently. Marcela Silva, from Angola's National Program to Fight AIDS, presented to the same conference a significantly higher count of the number of AIDS patients in Angola, saying 8,149 people have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, as opposed to the 5,112 previously announced. Experts estimated the actual figure is 43,748 cases, saying that the inefficiency of Angola's statistical services hides the severity of the situation. The government adopted a program on April 24th that aims to provide antiretroviral drugs to people with HIV, particularly to pregnant women and children. That plan calls for creating medical centers that would deal with the specific needs of AIDS patients throughout the country.
