TB Case Spurs Tests at Elkhart, Indiana, Area High School

November 11, 2002

The Elkhart County Health Department plans to administer TB tests to students and staff at Concord High School in Elkart, Ind., this week following the diagnosis of the disease in a student. The student was being treated with antibiotics and is expected to recover, according to Kathleen Overholt, the department’s TB case manager. Only a small percentage of the school’s 1,400 students were to be tested, but Overholt declined to reveal the number in order to protect the student’s confidentiality. Parents of all students at Concord were sent letters about the infection and the steps being taken by the Health Department. An earlier letter was sent to those who will be tested this week.
