Turkey: More Than 1,200 HIV Positive Cases Recorded by Health Ministry

In Turkey, Health Minister Osman Durmus announced that 1,246 HIV patients have applied to his ministry. In a written reply to Felicity Party Sanliufa Deputy Niyazi Yanmaz'a question, Durmus stated that STDs continue to be an important health problem in Turkey. "Syphilis and AIDS are the two diseases which have to be reported to our ministry under the law. In Turkey, although low, the number of AIDS cases has been on the rise since 1985," Durmus said. He stressed that many people might not even know that they are infected by HIV since the symptoms may not appear for 10 years after exposure.
