Lydia Edwards Dies; Physician Guided Tuberculosis ResearchNovember 13, 2001 Lydia B. Edwards, 96, a Public Health Service physician who retired in 1973 as a medical director assigned to TB research operations at the National Institutes of Health, died of cardiac arrest Nov. 7 at a retirement facility in Bedford, Mass. During World War II, Edwards worked for the UN in Yugoslavia, setting up medical care systems in war-torn areas. From 1948 to 1955, she helped oversee a UN program to eradicate TB in Denmark. Her work took her throughout Europe, India, Russia and Japan.
