Maryland: School Board Approves Condom DemonstrationsNovember 13, 2002 This article is part of TheBody.com's archive. Montgomery County, Md., schools will begin allowing teachers to give condom demonstrations in high school health education classes, school board members agreed in a 4 to 1 vote Tuesday. The vote comes after board members deferred voting in March, saying they needed more information. Since then, school officials learned that four of the eight school systems in the region not only teach about the condom's role in preventing pregnancy and STDs but also demonstrate its proper use. School officials said high school health teachers will use two fingers to demonstrate how to roll and unroll condoms to combat students' "significant misperceptions" about how they are used. The demonstration will also include a video. The new curriculum will take no more than an additional 10 minutes of class time. Only students who have parental permission will be allowed to view the demonstration.
