Frist to Co-chair Panel Dealing with Issues Surrounding HIV and AIDS

November 14, 2001

Sen. Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) said on Tuesday that he would co-chair a task force about AIDS. The Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank, is organizing the task force, which will spend two years focusing on public policy issues related to the disease. Expert panels plan to study funding, education initiatives and infrastructure needs in combating the disease. The task force also will examine the role of the United States in the fight against AIDS. Frist has introduced several pieces of AIDS legislation, including one that would enhance collaboration between federal agencies and establish a health care corps to mobilize health professionals in afflicted countries. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) will co-chair the task force.
