Great Britain: Fear Fuels TB SpreadNovember 14, 2002 Dr. Mike Barer, a clinical biologist at the University of
Leicester, says some members of the Asian community in Leicester
are unwilling to admit they have TB -- contributing to a local TB
rate four times higher than the United Kingdom's national
average. "People from the Indian subcontinent suffer a great
stigma if their family is known to have TB -- because they believe
it is inherited," Barer said. Leicester has 50 cases of TB per
100,000, compared to 12.5 cases per 100,000 nationwide. "We need
to make it easier for people to come forward and be treated for
the disease," Barer said.
