Kenya Left Out of AIDS, TB Global Fund

November 1, 2002

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is supporting various programs in Uganda and Tanzania in East Africa but did not fund any programs in Kenya in its first round of disbursements. Kenya's failure to win the fund's support was linked to rampant corruption in the health sector, including doubts about the country's programs for HIV and malaria. At least 2.5 million people are infected with HIV in Kenya, and about 36,000 children under age five die of malaria each year in the nation. Kenya submitted proposals to the fund's board at the end of September for the second round of grants, which are expected to be announced in the new year.
