Vatican Supports Relief on AIDS Drug CostsNovember 20, 2001 Vatican officials last week welcomed new steps by the World Trade Organization (WTO) to help poor, AIDS-stricken populations gain access to life-prolonging drugs. Archbishop Javier Lozano Barragan, president of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Assistance to Health Care Workers, said that without such steps, entire nations in the developing world face extinction. He spoke in reaction to news of progress at WTO negotiations over whether AIDS drug patents held by US and Swiss companies should be waived to dramatically lower their commercial costs in developing countries hard-hit by AIDS.
