Cuban Scientists Plan to Test AIDS Vaccine

November 20, 2001

Cuban scientists plan to test an AIDS vaccine on HIV-infected volunteers, officials in Havana said on Sunday. The idea is "to do a pilot study using the vaccine together with tri-therapy or the 'cocktail,' a therapeutic vaccination composed of three different drugs," said Carlos Duarte, head of the AIDS Department at the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center. Duarte heads a team of scientists who have been working on an AIDS vaccine since 1992. The researchers plan to lower the patients' HIV levels using combination therapy, then administer two to three doses of vaccine to increase their immunological response, he said.
