North Korea's Health Care System Collapsing -- World Health OrganizationNovember 21, 2001 In Beijing on Tuesday, officials of the World Health Organization warned that North Korea's health care system is near collapse following years of natural disaster, and the national mortality rate has risen by more than 35 percent. One day earlier, WHO Director-General Gro Harlem Brundtland made her first trip to the nation to open a permanent WHO mission in Pyongyang. She also oversaw the first delivery of TB medicine to treat 33,000 people with the disease. North Korea has suffered severe food shortages in recent years, compounded by harsh winters. Its economy has sputtered since the fall of the Soviet Union and the withdrawal of aid and subsidized trade.
