Officials: Juvenile AIDS Infections in China Low, but Immediate Preventative Action Needed

November 21, 2001

Fewer than 1,000 Chinese children have AIDS, but that figure could grow drastically unless the government exploits its brief opportunity to prevent an AIDS epidemic, UN children's advocates said Wednesday. "China has the opportunity to prevent a major, major epidemic," but it must act now to slow the rate of new infections, said Edwin J. Judd, UNICEF area representative for China and Mongolia. The advocates' comments came at the end of a nine-day visit by Mehr Khan, UNICEF regional director for East Asia and the Pacific. Khan attended a session of China's first-ever AIDS conference and toured UNICEF projects in the province of Sichuan.
