AIDS Fight Weakens African Countries

November 28, 2001

The World Bank said Tuesday it would consider providing an additional $500 million in no-interest loans to help developing countries combat HIV/AIDS. The 183-nation lending organization said the loans would go to African countries, which are home to an estimated 25 million of the world's 36 million HIV-positive people. The bank said it has committed more than $1.7 billion to fighting HIV/AIDS; it is also helping developing countries put HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment efforts in the forefront of their strategies to reduce poverty. The bank and UNAIDS estimate that approximately $3 billion is needed every year to fund basic prevention, care and treatment in Africa.
