Syphilis Cases Keep Dropping in St. Louis

November 29, 2001

St. Louis has dropped off the list of top 10 places in the nation in reported syphilis cases, according to data released Wednesday by the CDC. Health officials said extra federal money and better coordination of screening, prevention and treatment services had taken the city from No. 8 in primary and secondary syphilis cases in 1999 to No. 26 last year. St. Louis was one of 31 communities across the country that received special funding from the CDC to reduce the disease rate. "All of the sexually transmitted diseases -- HIV included -- for whatever reason are linked to poverty, homelessness and other socioeconomic indicators that we have in our inner cities," said Don Connor, communicable disease manager for the St. Louis Health Department.
