New TB Vaccine Trials Set to Start in Britain

November 7, 2001

The Wellcome Trust research charity today announced that trials of the first new TB vaccine in Britain in 80 years will begin early next year. The new TB vaccine, developed by Dr. Helen McShane, involves the use of two different vaccines, each with the same immune response-producing antigen. The existing BCG vaccine will be given, and the new second vaccine will act as a booster. The first part of the trial will take two to three years, the charity said. If it is successful, it will next be tested in countries where TB is endemic.
