Uganda: School HIV/AIDS Manual ReadyNovember 7, 2002 Uganda's presidential advisor on HIV/AIDS, Dr. Jesse
Kagimba, said last week at the Kampala AIDS Conference that a
manual was ready for primary school teachers to begin educating
their pupils about HIV/AIDS. The manual will, among other things,
help teachers train school girls to reject the sexual advances of
men. It also contains general information on HIV and how to
prevent infection, as well as other dangers of engaging in sex at
an early age. The Ministry of Education prepared the manual with
help from the Ministry of Health and the Uganda AIDS Commission.
They are preparing a more detailed manual for secondary schools.
This follows President Yoweri Museveni's directive early this
year to introduce sex education in all schools. Kagimba said the
school AIDS program was a good opportunity to protect close to 10
million students.
