Iran -- More than 3,000 People HIV Positive

November 8, 2001

Mohammed-Mehdi Guya, head of the Diseases Management Center of Iran's Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Training, said on Wednesday that 3,109 people are HIV-positive in the nation. Guya stated that 369 of those affected by AIDS are in critical condition, adding that some 334 people have died of AIDS to date. He said that drug users make up the majority of HIV cases. Drug traffickers and addicts constitute two-thirds of Iran's prisoners. Most of the inmates are between the ages of 22 and 38. Less than 3 percent of prisoners are women.
