News Briefs Rape Suspects Should Be Tested for AIDS: French Medical AcademyNovember 8, 2002 On Monday in Paris, the Academy of Medicine, France's most prestigious medical authority, said rape suspects should be tested for HIV against their will to provide emergency help for victims. The body called on the health and justice ministries to "urgently" revise the law so rape suspects cannot refuse the test. Roger Henrion, author of the appeal, said many rape victims are given a month-long, three-medication course of drugs after the attack to reduce their changes of HIV infection. However, because of serious side effects, many victims stop taking them. Knowing the suspect carried HIV would encourage the victims to complete the regimen.
